The Aetna Foundation, the philanthropic arm of healthcare insurer Aetna, has partnered with the conference Health 2.0 to issue a developer challenge. The intent is to spur new interactive browser-based applications designed to make data about obesity more accessible and usable.Aetna Foundation President Anne C. Beal, MD, announced the challenge June 9 at the Health Data Initiative Forum at the Institute of Medicine meeting in Bethesda, Md.

At the close of the Health Data Initiative Forum held on Thursday, Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra announced StartUp Health, a strategic initiative designed to improve access to capital, education and resources for health and wellness entrepreneurs.StartUp Health CEO Steve Krein said the initiative will be led by former Time Warner Chairman and CEO, and current Director of OrganizedWisdom, Jerry Levin.

Forty-five new and updated health applications that harness the power of open data from HHS and other sources are being presented Thursday at the 2nd Annual Health Data Initiative Forum in New York. The initiative was opened by Matt Miller, host of NPR's Left, Right & Center, who called the work being presented "the beginning of enormous sets of innovative data" being used to "touch all our lives as patients."

A new report from Ambient Insight shows that the U.S. corporate market for self-paced e-learning products and services reached $6.8 billion in 2010, and projects that revenues will reach $7.1 billion by 2015.The report, The US Corporate Market for Self-paced eLearning Products and Services: 2010-2015 Forecast, analyzes expenditures by four company sizes: small, medium, large, and enterprise. The report also provides forecasts for 10 vertical industries and a revenue breakout of 10 content areas by subject matter.

The booming healthcare market, which is expected to account for nearly one-fifth of U.S. GDP by 2019, is driving a surge of activity from companies looking to mine opportunities for growth, differentiation and jobs, just as a new generation of tech-savvy consumers is creating a new market for digital and interactive health, according to PwC's Health Research Institute.Seventy-six percent of Fortune 50 companies are either in the health industry or have health divisions, according to a recent survey.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) announced June 8 the Investing in Innovations (i2) Initiative - a program designed to spur innovations in health IT. As part of the program's rollout, ONC has awarded nearly $5 million to the Capital Consulting Corporation (CCC) and Health 2.0 LLC, to fund projects supporting innovations in research and encouraging health IT development through open-innovation mechanisms like prizes and challenges.
